Content delivery, video at scale, and the data model
The defining infrastructure challenge in an LMS is almost always video. Text and documents are cheap to serve; video is not, and the difference only shows up under load. A single learner streaming a lesson is trivial; a whole cohort pressing play at the start of a mandatory training window is a genuine capacity problem, and it is where naive LMS builds fall over. We do not serve video from the application server. We use a media pipeline built for it: transcoding to adaptive bitrates so playback adjusts to each learner’s connection, and delivery over a CDN so the load is distributed rather than concentrated on one origin. Either way the decision is made on your concurrency, not guessed.
Underneath the delivery sits the data model, and in an LMS it is richer than people expect because learning is inherently relational. Learners belong to cohorts and groups; courses contain modules and lessons in sequence, sometimes with prerequisites; enrolments connect learners to courses with a status and a history; assessments produce attempts, scores and completion records that must be reliable enough to certify and audit. Protecting learner data and controlling access
Learning platforms hold data that carries real weight under UK GDPR, and the two most common cases both raise the stakes. Many LMS platforms serve minors (schools, colleges, youth training), where data on children attracts heightened protection and a low tolerance for mistakes. Others hold data on employees, where completion records, assessment scores and training history are personal data an employer holds about its staff. In both cases the answer is the same: we treat data protection as part of the design from the first commit rather than a compliance box to tick before launch, minimising what is collected, being clear about why, and building on a lawful footing rather than retrofitting one.
Access control is the practical heart of it. An LMS has genuinely distinct roles: learners, instructors, administrators, and often managers who can see their team’s progress but not everyone’s, and each must see and do exactly what they should and nothing more. A learner must never reach another learner’s records or an administrative function; an instructor sees their courses and cohorts, not the whole estate.
